The Secret to Smarter Decisions - The Power of Listening

We are told about the importance of listening from a young age, but as we get older it becomes easier to block “outside” noise and hone in on our decided stances. There is even a psychological phenomenon surrounding this: confirmation bias. This is the human tendency to search for, interpret and prefer information that confirms one’s prior beliefs. It is easy to say this is simply humans being judgmental and prejudiced. However, there are complex reasons behind confirmation bias including how it helps us refine the huge amount of data we continuously process. By shining a light on ideas that take less digestion, it is easier for us to get by in the world. Stereotypes are an example of how we make processing the world easier for ourselves, even if subconsciously.
Nonetheless, I implore you to take the time to listen. We must make a conscious effort to listen beyond our biases. Most of us are caught up preparing our own responses to someone else’s words that we do not fully take in someone else’s point of view. Of course, we cannot do this all the time, but for topics involving human rights and dignity - we can only really learn by appreciating that our world view is not the ultimate reality. Especially when it comes to topics like racism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia and more, listening to the marginalised individuals’ real experiences is how we grow as a society. More than that, it helps us to develop empathy and become better allies. For example, there was a notable lack of listening during the recent decision in the UK regarding LGBTQ+ rights. Unfortunately, this has had a harsh impact on the transgender people simply looking to live their lives. It is highly alarming that the Court failed to hear directly from trans people. If justice matters, why were their voices ignored?
To truly care about fairness, we must start by listening - not just passively, but with intention and humility. This principle does not stop at social issues or courtrooms; it extends into our everyday interactions and the work we create. Whether it is through the development of our games or in how we engage with colleagues and customers, eXplore is committed to listening better. We care deeply about crafting experiences that are as inclusive and enriching as possible for players, while also nurturing a work environment that values empathy and understanding. In the indie games community, conventions like EGX are a prime example of how listening brings diverse people together. We have witnessed it firsthand: a space where everyone can feel safe and connected. By truly listening to one another, attendees share ideas, grow in understanding, and, ultimately, improve both their games and their relationships.
