When you are going through a challenging time or facing a difficult situation, you often hear or read that reaching out for support and talking to someone is one of the most effective and rewarding things to do to help you feel better. Indeed, research shows that talking to a trusted person about how you are feeling will encourage you to let it all out. At times, this is just what you might need in order to feel better. Moreover, communicating your emotions can provide stress relief, and can lighten the load of concerns you might be having. In addition, someone from outside the situation can help you break down the problem into smaller parts and give you a brand-new perspective.

However, although sharing your problems seems to be one of the ways towards a brighter future, looking for the right person to talk to might add another layer of stress at a time when you already feel overwhelmed, and not provide the relief you are expecting. But you need to trust the process and if you do not feel confident with sharing your problems with someone close to you, you always have the possibility to reach out to a professional therapist or (if needed anonymously) contact a support helpline. Once you have overcome this first hurdle, you need to focus your energy on what to say and the amount of information and facts you are willing to disclose. You might even want to write everything down. This way, you can process the aspects of the issues you are ready to share, order your thoughts, choose your words wisely, and in a way prepare for the conversation you will have.
